DOES MY STONE NEED TO BE SEALED?

In short, maybe! Many papers and arguments have been written about this question and subject, and after all my reading and research I have come to these conclusions. Most of the "seal everything" position comes from the people who produce, and or market sealers and the contractors who want to, "up-sell" their customers whether the stone calls for sealing or not. I choose to test all of these things myself and believe my own eyes, and I can test the stone in your home and let you be the judge.

That being said;Natural stones have different porosities therefore some do need to be sealed to protect against staining while others do not. Most polished marbles do not need to be sealed because of the surface tension created in the polishing phase. Travertine, while relatively "soft" on the MOHS hardness scale is also very dense and will not absorb much at all including any type of sealer. Limestone however is very porous and even when polished should be sealed with an impregnating sealer.

A few simple tests can determine whether or not your stone needs to be sealed, bottom line is; if it is not absorbing anything then it will not stain. Do not be pressured into sealing a stone that will not even absorb the sealer you try to "seal" it with, good quality sealers are very expensive and an ethical service provider would never perform and un-needed service.
